Options for a Part Time MAT Program

There are all sorts of part time options for MAT programs; the degree was developed to increase the ranks of teachers and is directed at working teachers who want to move up in accreditation and at working professionals who want to move into education. Since the primary targets for enrollment are working people most schools provide flexibility in their MAT programs for busy professionals who need to keep working. The one exception to this in some schools is the semester spent as a student teacher, which is a four or five day commitment every week of several hours per day. This list is a sampling of the variety of part time MAT programs that are out there.

    • Johns Hopkins University has their FlexMAT program designed for full time professionals with no experience in teaching. The student has up to five years to complete the program, working at a self-designed schedule with access to classes at one of three campuses. Students who need to make up undergraduate content can do so at a local community college, another university or at Johns Hopkins. It takes some planning but the program design is excellent.

    • Willamette University offers the Aspire program for teachers and non-teachers that want an advanced teaching credential. This two year program holds class Mondays as well as one Saturday a month. Students will have most of the first year to study for the test in the selected teaching specialty. Students will be able to manage their curricula so that they qualify for two adjacent levels of teaching: Early Childhood (age 3 through grade 4), Elementary (grades 3-8), Middle Level (grades 5-9) and High School (grades 7-12).

    • SUNY Empire State College is part of the State University of New York system, so its part time MAT program is attuned to the requirements of the New York public school licensing requirements. It is a three year program taught online and on site and provides mentoring through the first two years of the program. Graduates are eligible for a one-year initial teaching certificate, after which they will qualify for professional teaching licensure.

    • University of North Carolina/Charlotte offers a part time MAT program that is almost exclusively online. Students are expected to complete four to six classes per year; thirty three of the thirty nine credit hours are online courses. The program is delivered in two phases and in the second phase students will be actively teaching in the classroom. While the program is based on distance learning, students must be North Carolina residents in order to enroll

    • Ohio State University offers the Master of Arts in Teaching as a full time or part time option, with heavy emphasis on summer courses and a substantial number of online courses. The University has built the maximum amount of flexibility into its program with the goal of encouraging rapid expansion of the Ohio teacher corps. There is exceptional variety in the specialization options, including special education, teaching drama, and engineering & technology education.

    • Bard College in New York offers a two year part time MAT program that includes classroom work for the summer and fall quarters of the first year and a research project that consumes the winter and spring quarters. The entire second half of the second year is spent in full time student teaching, focused on the academic specialty the student has selected.

    • Oregon State University has a two year part time MAT program available for Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. Part time students in this program do their full time student teaching in the spring quarter of the second year.

    • Duke University offers an MAT program for aspiring secondary school teachers only-middle school and elementary school curricula are not in the catalog. Students may study part time in their academic department-that is, the academic specialty they have selected to focus on-but during the internship semester the demands on their time is much more substantial.

    • East Carolina University has a MAT program that has ten areas of teaching specialization to choose from. Working teachers who are entering the program laterally can opt for a part time program. Some areas of the program have been designated as part time options, and there is some flexibility for completing the two summer programs and the internship.

    • Michigan State University offers a Master of Arts in Teaching and Curriculum program with several options for entry and for completion. Working teachers who enroll can complete the course in as little as one year; full time students who are not teachers will spend two years in the program. The University puts a cap on part time enrollment at five years from the date of entry or the date of the first MSU class that is credited to the program.
